The History of Tomatoes

Tomatoes probably originated in South America. During the Renaissance, tomatoes were considered poisonous because they are part of the nightshade family, of which belladonna is also a member. Tomatoes were originally grown more as ornaments than as food. John Gerald first grew tomatoes in England in the 1590s; by the 1750s, tomatoes were widely eaten as a fruit in Britain. Tomatoes were first seen in North America in 1710 in what is now South Carolina by William Salmon. From the 1830's to 1840, Americans experienced “tomato mania,” when the plant’s fruits were in high demand; the mania led to tomatoes becoming a regular part of the American diet. During this period, tomatoes were used to treat dyspepsia, diarrhea, and other stomach ailments. Some now think they may have worked as a “cure” because of unhealthy shortages of fruit in the diet that caused the original stomach upset.
