Planting Tips & Care

Tips for Growing Tomatoes

- Plant in a spot that gets 6-8 hours of daily sun.
- Soil must be rich in calcium, with a pH of 6-7 (don’t go below 5.5 or blossom-end rot and cracking can occur). (Tip: Save your eggshells! After they’re dry, crush them and sprinkle them around the base of the plant.)
- Use loose soil with a mixture of peat moss and manure, and keep it moist, but not soggy. Good drainage is important for tomatoes and can be best supplied by raised beds.
- Make sure your soil is warm.
- Don’t let plants get too leggy. If they become leggy, plant your tomato horizontally: dig a trench and lay the plant on its side with only the top cluster of leaves peeking above the soil line.
- After plants have gotten larger, you’ll need to harden them off by exposing them, on a daily basis, to outside conditions. Continue the process for two weeks, and your plants will be ready for the great outdoors.
